Geocache Description:

This is part of a series that will bring you to some locations that were significant in James Joyce's life at home in Ireland and abroad. This series is now international (see list below); so keep watching as more caches will be listed as the series is extended around Europe!

Don't forget: BLOOMSDAY ON JUNE 16TH!!!

James Joyce (2nd February 1882 – 13th January 1941) is Ireland's most famous Author. One of the most influential writers of the 20th century, he is best known for his novel ‘Ulysses’ (1922). His other major works include ‘Dubliners’ (1914), a collection of short stories, and novels, 'Finnegans wake (1916) and ‘A portrait of the Artist as a young man’ (1939).

Between 1887 and 1891 Joyce lived with his family at 1 Martello Terrace, Strand road Bray, Co. Wicklow. This terrace is situated at the north end of the promenade, beside the harbour. Today this heritage house is privately owned (however, tours are available at limited times during the year). A plaque dedicated to Joyce is on the exterior wall. Many features of the area, such as the seafront, promenade and harbour remain relatively unchanged, since Joyce’s day. These were James Joyces formative years, and later, he set the ‘Christmas scene’ from ‘ A Portrait of the Artist’ in the front room of the residence.

James Joyce was a boy of around six to nine years old when he lived at Martello Terrace; and probably got up to the usual high jinks boys his age do: playing games, maybe even treasure hunting! (In 1888 there is a record of him having been badly bitten by a dog ...after he, and his younger brother Stannie had been throwing stones at it!) ...Where do you think he would have hidden that cache??

While in the area visit the swan sanctuary at the Harbour, and observe the Martello Tower (Bono's former residence, up on the hill) after which the terrace was named. A stroll along the Promenade will take you to Bray Head - where more bounty hunting awaits! When you locate the cache, you will find yourself thinking back to James Joyce’s childhood days.

There will be a bonus cache to find for those who collect all the caches in this series...simply collect the codes from the inside of each cache in the series and a final set of co-ordinates will be posted at the end of the series...

Congratulations to The Misfits on FTF!!!
