We all need heros and this is in memory of a local hero, Dr Mary Walker (1832-1919). Dr. Walker was a Civil War physician, a surgeon in 52 Ohio , in the infantry branch of the army, a pioneer woman, and the only woman to be awarded the Medal of Honor. A statue has been erected at the Oswego, NY town hall on Cty. Rte 7. You may view her medal, photos and some of her history in the building. Hours are 8:30-4:30 Monday thru Friday, and Saturday 9-12. We thank the town clerk for her involvement with the historical society and allowing us to use the statue as a waypoint.
Please stay on the sidewalk, be respectful at all times and show restraint when viewing.
Dr. Walker passed away at the young age of 86 and is buried in the Oswego Rural Cemetery where you may visit her final resting place. There are 3 other caches in the cemetery.
