Geocache Description:

A fine walk from a number of starting points around Wideford Hill. DO NOT park on the main roads on either side of the Hill unless there are designated parking areas and do not block gates or nearby farm roads. The easiest place to park is on the summit of Wideford Hill and to walk down to the cache over the heather flanks.

Built into the north-western slope of Wideford Hill, a few miles from Kirkwall, is the Wideford Cairn. Around 328 feet above sea-level, this prehistoric structure cairn is a Maeshowe-type cairn dating from around 3,000 BC.

Built on a steep hillside over looking the Bay o' Firth, the cairn's builders quarried into the slope to create a level platform on which to build their monument.

This cache was placed in memory of Elaine who was tragically killed in a road collision as she returned home from a holiday in Orkney, where she had endured (with a smile) many searches for geochaches with her husband Chris (geofaf). The couple cycled to the top of the hill and also visited the cairn.

The cache is a small plastic box.
