Geocache Description:

The March Triangle Madness (mTm) series released in March 2012 by Bubblegummers included 144 caches laid out in the high desert juniper forest on BLM land east of the Redmond airport and North Canal, north of the Powell Butte Highway, south of Highway 126 and west of Cavalry/McCaffery road. This property is managed in conjunction with the BIAK Training Center for the Oregon Army National Guard. They discussed the placement of the caches with BIAK personnel and had been given the green light on their placement. However, they asked them to advise cachers that on the weekends, particularly when there is nice weather, there may be uniformed muggles in the area doing training exercises.

In April 2023, Bubblegummers downsized this series creating 5 triangles (87 caches). Geo51 and TurtleLP adopted these triangles creating the 5 GeoArt Pyramid Series. The caches within each triangle are 1/3 of a mile apart. All the containers are the same type and hides are similar.

Bring your own writing stick - No Stickers because they make logs difficult to roll

NOTE:  There are numerous parking places and roads in the area. Some are suitable for your Sunday sedan; some require a high-clearance 4X4 geomobile.

Pyramid of the Niches

In the humid Jungles of the Mexican state of Veracruz lie the enigmatic ruins of El Tajín, an ancient city built by a mysterious lost civilization.

The Pyramid of the Niches is located on the archaeological site of El Tajin. It is located in the present-day Mexican State of Veracruz. Unlike many other great Mesoamerican temples, which were completed in stages, this pyramid seems to have been built all at once. Archaeologists speculate that the temple was built sometime between 1100 and 1150 CE when El Tajin was at the height of its power. It is made of locally available sandstone.

The Pyramid of the Niches has a square base, 118 feet on each side. It features six tiers (there was once a seventh, but it was destroyed over the centuries), each of which is ten feet high: total height of the Pyramid of the Niches in its present state is about 60 feet.

The Pyramid of the Niches is rich in symbolism. The 365 niches clearly represent the solar year. In addition, there were once seven levels. Seven times fifty-two is three hundred and sixty-four. On the monumental stairway, there were once six platform-altars (now there are five), each of which featured three small niches: this reaches a total of eighteen special niches, representing the eighteen months of the Mesoamerican solar calendar.

The ritual function of the building is not primarily a calendar. The deep niches imitate caves, which long have been considered to be passageways to the underworld, where many of the gods reside. Excerpts from ThoughtCo.com, Atlas Obscura.com & Wikimedia.com
