Geocache Description:

You may have noticed major civil engineering work being done at the moment in various locations on Wirral - this is part of the 3 year long project to lay a new subsea cable from Scotland to Wales via Wirral to carry 2,200MW of electricity generated in Hunterston to the power station at Connahs Quay

The route is 262 miles long of which 240 miles is underwater.

The project is called the Westernlink and the DC cables carrying the 2,200MW will proivde sufficient electricity for 2 million people.

It has taken National Grid a few years to plan and agree with all parties the route the cable takes through wirral.

Most of the dual 130mm diameter cables will be laid in an open cut trench 1.5m wide and 1m deep. The working corrider for the trench will be between 15 and 30m wide as it includes temporary drainage, areas to store spoil, and an area to track machines.

The route under rivercourses, railway lines and sensative areas will be moled.

Details of the scheme can be found on the website : - (visit link)

As at time of placing this cache the site at Landican is one of the contractors compounds. You will see work ongoing at Meols and Pump Lane roundabout at the moment also.
