What entices geocachers to seek out adventure and to challenge themselves beyond their comfort zone? In this case, it’s the Rocks. We saw them from FR 1666, beckoning us towards Black Mesa, offering us vast vistas and lots of hiding spots.
Caution: Beware of rattlesnakes!
Not recommended in warm weather!
Not recommended for young children!
Bring food and plenty of water!
From Payson, go north on Hwy 87 to FR 1666 just north of the Verde River bridge. Note the Exit waypoint below. Follow FR 1666 – a rocky, narrow Jeep / ATV trail – about 1 mile to the top of the saddle. See waypoint. Bushwhack the last 700 feet or so to the cache.
We recommend bringing the spoiler pictures.
Note: As of 18 November 2014 FR 1666 has been improved. We still recommend a high clearance and 4X4 vehicle, but the bigger boulders have been pushed to the side and the road is wider.
Congrats to 321Kaboom for FTF
