In August 2012 the UK Mega Event is coming to Cartmel in Cumbria. This dog walk is one of a varied series of events supporting this Mega Event. It is hosted by Mike (muttoneer) and his dog Farley, supported by other members of the North West Mega Event Team.
Join us for a gentle stroll along the peaceful west shore of Windermere with your geo-hounds, amongst quiet woodland where they should be able to have a good run about! After getting to the event coordinates you can follow Mike and Farley across Claife Heights to Far Sawrey. This is Beatrix Potter country, and the landscape hereabouts inspired several of her works.

The walk starts from the National Trust car park at Harrow Slack at 2pm, and will take between 3 and 4 hours.
About the walk:
The first part of the walk, from the car park to the event coordinates, is relatively flat and is suitable for less agile dogs (and their owners!) Once we reach the event coordinates the route climbs steeply uphill through the pleasant woodland. When we reach the top, the track enters farmland (and our friends go back on their leads) before the path descends to the village of Far Sawrey, via a series of delightful little tarns. From Far Sawrey we head back uphill to find a steep little track which takes us along the edge of the ridge for great views of the Ferry station and Bowness on Windermere, before dropping down to complete the circuit.
The terrain here is fairly gentle, apart from a couple of steep sections. I would highly recommend wearing walking boots, or at the least footwear with a good grip. You'll also need a waterproof jacket, as Lakeland weather can be unpredictable.
To claim a 'find' it is not necessary to go on the whole walk, just to get as far as the event coordinates, near Belle Grange, for 3pm. At this point, those of you who don't fancy doing the full walk can simply return along the lakeshore path.
When you sign up for the walk, please include the number of dogs you are bringing with you in your log (and ideally their names) to assist with planning - all canine attendees will get a little treat when they get to the event coordinates!
Not bringing any geo-hounds? Don't worry - everyone's welcome as long as they like dogs!
This walk passes by a number of caches, and there will be time to find these as we pass. You may also like to brush up on your Beatrix Potter before you arrive, as her home (Hill Top) is not far from the route of the walk and may be somewhere you might like to visit before the walk starts.
How to get here?
By car:
Either from the west on the B5285 from Hawkshead via Far Sawrey, or from the east, using the Windermere Car Ferry. It is possible to park at the ferry terminal at Bowness on Windermere, and get across as a foot passenger. At time of writing, cars cost £4.30 single and foot passengers 50p.
By Bus:
The 525 Cross Lakes Shuttle bus goes from Bowness on Windermere to Hawkshead, and drops off close to the start of the walk.
