A bison tube hidden in the reflection garden at Hermitage Presbyterian Church.
In 1871, the congregation at Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church, located in Fishersville Va., established the "Center at Hermitage" as a place for the people of the up and coming neighborhoods to gather together for worship. By 1877 the Center had become known as Union Chapel at Hermitage, it was located approximately 200 yards from the present day church. In 1880, two acres of land were donated to the Chapel which were used to add a cemetery on to the back of the property and construct a Church. The construction began in 1885 and finished sometime in 1887. The Church at Hermitage remained a part of Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church until May of 1916 and continued to share a pastor with them for a number of years afterwards. At this time there were forty-seven charter members and Sunday School had an enrollment of 162. Six new Sunday School rooms were constructed at the rear of the church in 1928 to accommodate the growing congregation. By 1950, the little church at Hermitage had become well established and decided to replace all of the old coal burning stoves, redecorate their sanctuary, construct a new social hall and add even more Sunday School rooms. New construction and all the improvements were completed by 1952. The year 1953 began with 128 members showing an almost 260% growth in under 40 years. In 1974 they built a new larger sanctuary which is still in use today and in 2005 they completed construction on a brand new fellowship hall with stage, a new up-to-date kitchen and again, more Sunday School rooms. They have more recently updated their AV setup and systems to include the ability to record audio and video for services or any events that take place and have a new pipe organ. They have always and will continue to hold to an open door policy to admit members, friends and visitors. You can park anywhere in the loop, please be courteous of other people and try to keep your vehicle on the pavement. This location is quiet, peaceful and a good spot to reflect upon things. I like to come here to ponder new ideas for geocache containers, hiding locations and puzzles. Have a seat, think for a while and make sure you look in the RIGHT place. This area is busy at times, especially Sunday morning and evening, if you see more than 2 or 3 vehicles I would probably wait and attempt later. This is a bison tube so BYOP.
