It's time to take a ride back well over 60 years ago when the electric train was part of the valleys history. The interurban trains known as B.C.E.R. operated between Vancouver and Chilliwack from 1910 to 1950 and on its last days it would cost $3.85 return for the 76 mile trip. The electric trains ran along the south side of Sumas Lake before it was drained hugging Vedder Mtn. while the CNR railroad ran along the north side of the lake hugging Sumas Mtn..If you use your imagination you can almost hear the old electric trains whistle blowin' as it's rolling through the valley echoing off Vedder and Sumas mountains. The old trains made 61 stops between Vancouver and Chilliwack until October 1, 1950 and sadly, most of those old trains are long gone. The going was tough in winters with slides from the mountains burying the tracks and frost heave tearing them up again. A few old trains are still around in museums and possibly still operating around Stanley Park. It's hard to imagine electric trains running through the valley isn't it? No doubt there are some folks around that remember the trains from their childhood and could share some great memories. Sadly, one day there will no longer be first hand stories to be told...only in books and internet will we know of those electric trains that passed along this way......
