Geocache Description:

Chanioporta used to be one of the few entrances to the fortified town (Candia). It is called so because people who came from the other big city of Crete, Chania, were using this entrance.
The gate was naturally also used by the rest of the western to Heraklion provinces.

The gate was constructed roughly in 1425 or so.

A little secret that most of the people ignore is that the main big gate you can see is not the original one.
The big gate where everyday traffic is passing though was constructed later repairing the fault (demolished part)of the wall.
The original gate is just to the left of the one you can see when entering the city.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The cache is strategically located in a place where you can enjoy the view to Chaniopporta, visit the Korakas* statue which is facing Chanioporta or even have a stroll on the grass of the stadium right beside you.
Cache has its own pencil so just go exploring ;)

This is a normally busy spot so use stealth.
Once the cache is spotted this should not be too difficult to achieve.

Note that this is also a gathering place for immigrants looking for work. Its these ones that stealth is mostly required.

You need to have a look arround as the cach is not directly visible.

*Michael Korakas was captain of the 1821 revolution.
He was born in Pombia of Messara in 1787 as Michael Karouzos. At the age of 18 years he killed Agha Aleeko. The nickname Korakas was given to him as a sign of aggression they showed against the Turks. He fought in the Cretan Revolution in 1821.
In 1827, in a pirate ship and with base the island of Karpathos, he fought the Ottoman and Egyptian fleets. In 1828 he continued the fight in Peloponnisos and was awarded the rank of Captain and also got the bronze cross of the Phoenix.
He returned to Crete in 1834 where he was greatly honoured. Michail Korakas then took part in the Cretan Revolutions of 1841, 1858 and 1866 fighting hard against large Turkish forces.
He declared the Cretan Revolution of 1878 and then was honored by King George in Athens and in Alexandria by Patriarch Photios. He died in old age at his land and home in Pombia, in southern Crete.
