Geocache Description:

WELCOME TO THE HIGHEST POINT ON THE ISLAND...THE LEWIS HILLS

This cache is located at the highest point in Newfoundland, the Lewis Hills. At an elevation of about 815 meters (2674 feet for you imperial dinosaurs), it is about 7 meters higher than Gros Morne.

This cache is accessible during all seasons. However, the journey will be as different in winter and summer as chaulk and cheese. During the summer, only experience hikers should attempt the journey...it is a 2-3 day trek over mountainous terrain. It is part of the International Appalachian Trail, check the website out here . Its a rugged walk with a little vegetation, but the destination is worth the walk. You can get to the base of the hills on all terrain vehicle. However, the trek to the cache site during winter is a very different situation.

Accessible from Corner Brook, Stephenville, Gallants, and perhaps other locations, it's a quick ride on snowmobile, about 50-60 km from Corner Brook. Riders should be very aware of how fast the weather can change on these hills. I've been on the hills when the weather has turned stormy almost instantly. I stayed put for an hour or so and the weather cleared enabling me to find my way out. Be sure that you check the weather forecast before leaving your place, bring a GPS, and a pack with the basic survival goods.

The view from the Lewis Hills is second to none. You will be able to see the ocean to the west. Towards the southwest you'll see the tip of the Port au Port peninsula, and even Shag Island. To the North are hills descending to the Serpentine Valley.

Along the shore are the impressive Rope Cove and Molly Ann Brook Canyons, be sure to bring your camera. And of course, the east contains the starting point of Fox Island River. This river has very little head water, and is fed primarily from snow and ice on the hills. It contains some of the clearest water I've ever had the privilege of casting a line in.

there is a chance of a muggle or 2 during the winter. Please excercise a little caution if there are other riders around and be sure to hide the cache but maintain accessiblity for the next geocacher. The cache is a steel camoflauged ammo can.

Even though the cache is on the ground among some rocks, the wind blows most of the snow away in this area, making the cache accessible in winter, although when I placed it there was a lot of snow around, and the only spot was where the sign once was.

The cache contains a log book, pencil, disposable camera, a travel bug, and a few other trinkets...and of course, a couple of salmon flies, dressed for caches, courtesy of the Salmon Slayer. Feel free to snap a photo with the camera. I'll post the pictures on cache web page at a later date. Please return the camera safely to the cache.
