A 35mm film canister which can be found either on the way up or back down from the Montgomery War Memorial cache (GC2MVFY)
The Montgomery County War Memorial stands on the summit of Montgomery Town Hill. It is dedicated to those members of the forces from the county who gave their lives in the two world wars.
Constructed from Portland stone, it has a square carved plinth and base that is surmounted by a circular stone column topped by a stone capping with ornate cornice. It stands some 50 feet high and at a height of 1050 feet. Listed by CADW as being of architectural importance, it is a truly beautiful structure with inscriptions in both English and Welsh engraved on the base.
This is the first of two caches which can be completed whilst doing the Montgomery War Memorial cache. I would recommend for the return journey but obviously they can be completed in either direction. Both caches are set slightly off the main path. It can be a popular area for dog walkers so stealth may be required. Please replace and hide the caches carefully.
Free parking is available at the castle, town centre (if you really fancy a long walk uphill), or in the layby just past the castle carpark if this is closed. Although a steady climb this walk is suitable for geokids - just walk ahead and you can't hear them whinging!! The well defined path can be muddy at times, and as usual please take care around livestock.
Montgomery has plenty of places for refreshments, and the castle is well worth a visit (and is free).
The cache will hold small TBs and swaps only.
