All That Remains
It is strange to walk through this area now. The roads are still there, lined with mature trees. There are some other landmarks left too, as you will see at the cache location. In the middle of it all... just a huge patch of gravel where a building should be.
The Ruined Altar
At the cache location you will find what I'm calling the Ruined Altar. It looks like it was nice at one time, but now it is literally falling apart from neglect. Personally, I think they should have disassembled it, out of respect, when the building was demolished.
Approaching the Cache
You have two choices of how to get to the cache. The first is to park at a parking meter at Mount Saint Vincent University. See the parking waypoint that I have provided. The second choice is to park in Rockingham near the church that is also marked as a waypoint. There is a walking path that is frequently used by students and staff. Whichever path you choose, it is about 0.5 Km from the starting point to the cache. There are some other caches nearby at the university, so that may influence your choice.
Short History of the Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse
The Sisters of Charity made their home in this massive building since 1959. The previous Motherhouse, opened in 1873, was destroyed by fire in 1951. In 2001 the Sisters of Charity announced that the Motherhouse no longer suited its needs. An initial concept to redevelop the Motherhouse building and surrounding lands (Village Park Place) fell through in 2006. "Deconstruction" of the structure took place in the winter of 2008/2009. A large amount of equipment and infrastructure was either re-used and incorporated into the new residence, donated to other groups, or auctioned off.
