Earthcache "Kölschhäuser Koppe"
Die Koppe, ein etwas über 350 Meter hoher, erloschener Vulkan, ist die höchste Erhebung in der Gemarkung Kölschhausen.
Die Kölschhäuser Koppe ist ein Kegelberg, umgangssprachlich auch "Basaltkegel" genannt.
Die Säulenstellung ist auf der Nordseite des Berges über ungefähr 15 m Höhe, in einem alten Steinbruch, aufgeschlossen.
Schon in weit zurückliegenden Zeiten war der Berg über die Grenzen von Kölschhausen hinaus gut bekannt.
In verschiedenen alten Schriften wird auf die Koppe als Hexentanzplatz verwiesen.
Deshalb traute sich früher niemand aus den umliegenden Dörfer auf den Gipfel.
Ein Basaltkegel ist ein wissenschaftshistorischer Begriff, der umgangssprachlich noch verwendet wird.
Er beschreibt das durch Verwitterung freigelegte, widerstandsfähige Basaltgestein im Innern eines erloschen Vulkans, das als Härtling die umgebende Landschaft überragt.
In den Geowissenschaften wird Basaltkegel als Fachbegriff nicht mehr verwendet.
Dies gilt auch für ähnliche Begriffe wie Phonolithkegel oder Porphyrkegel.
Solche Kegelberge entstanden, als Magma aus dem Erdinneren aufstieg und nahe der Erdoberfläche erstarrte.
Meist handelt es sich um Gestein, das am Ende der Fördertätigkeit im Schlot eines Vulkans erstarrte.
Der ursprüngliche Kegelberg wurde im Laufe der Zeit durch die Abtragung der umgebenden weicheren Materialien durch Erosion zerstört.
Der obere Teil des Gesteinskerns wurde auf diese Weise freigelegt.
Die Kölschhäuser Koppe befindet sich im Naturschutzgebiet Koppe.
Dieses ist das erste Naturschutzgebiet des Kreis Wetzlar (1931).

  • 4. Welche Form haben die erstarrten Lavamassen?
  • 5. Messt welche Breite der komplette Aufschluss hat. (sichtbare Basaltsäulen)
  • 6. Gern gesehen aber optional, ein Foto von Dir mit GPS an der Koppe hochladen.

    Earthcache "Kölschhäuser Koppe"
    The Koppe, an extinct volcano, a bit over 350m high, ist the highest elevation in the district Kölschhausen.
    The Kölschhäuser Koppe is a volcanic cone consisting of basalt.
    The columnar basalt on the northern side of the mountain is about 15m high.
    The columns on this side have been disclosed in earlier times because the Koppe was used as a stone quarry
    Since early ages the Koppe was known far beyond the district Kölschhausen.
    In old writings it was refered to have been a meetingplace for witches.
    Because of this, no citizens of the surrounding villages would have dared to go to the peak of the Koppe.
    Coneshaped mountains like the Koppe developed when volcanic lava rose from the inside of the earth and cooled down just neneath the surface of the earth.
    With time the softer rock above the volcanic basalt will erode an dissapear, leaving the much harder basalt left over as a peak in the surrounding area.
    The Kölschhäuser Koppe is located in a nature conservation area called "Naturschutzgebiet Koppe".
    It was the first nature conservation area of the district Wetzlar (1931).
