Geocache Description:

The Gates Elm, or the Mass Pike killed my tree!

Update

The site has been extensively changed since the cache was originally placed, and the original cache location no longer exists. It has now been updated to a new location that is a simple park and grab, using a hide that any experienced cacher will instantly recognize. For the full history though please do read the original description:

Original Description

Original location: N 42° 17.746 W 071° 29.081

Once upon a time this location was a tourist destination, the site of the famous Gates Elm (also known as the Rugg Elm, depending on which owner of the adjacent house is referred to). It was believed to be the largest elm in New England and was the subject of postcards and art from people like Wallace Nutting.

Its location on Gates Road, though, was in the way of progress and a Mass Pike exit was built adjacent to the site and it's said that the construction disrupted the tree's root system and ultimately killed it. Today, nothing is left of the tree. The adjacent Gates house is a rather sad state of affairs too. (Update: after years of neglect the house was torn down October 22, 2012.)

The cache is located within feet of Gates Road at approximately the spot where the famous elm once grew. While a small cache it should not be a terribly difficult find. Note that the majority of Gates Road, east of the Mass Pike exit, does not connect with the small western portion where the cache is located. Look for the Gates Road sign on Route 9 eastbound to access the site.
