Geocache Description:

This three-step winter-friendly multi-cache is entirely located in the Forest Hill Cemetery and is designed to be only slightly more difficult than a traditional cache. The first two steps require you to find memorial headstones; only the final step involves a physical cache. The total distance walked will be under 500 metres. To avoid crossing private property, enter the cemetery near the lower end, through or close to the official entrance.

The entire cemetery is located at co-ordinates N 45 56.yyy and W 66 38.xxx and it is only the decimal minutes, the "yyy" for latitude and the "xxx" for longitude, that the required calculations for this cache will involve.

You will also be required to calculate "A", "B", and "C" in order to gain access to the final physical cache.

STEP ONE: Locate the memorial to Old C Squared at the co-ordinates given above. "C Squared" is not his real name but was a nickname given to him by University of New Brunswick students during the 34 years for which he was the president of UNB. Old C Squared was a mathematician and that, in part, may explain his nickname. His real name is on his memorial but his nickname provides a clue to his real name.

To determine the value of A, form a two digit number using the last digit of the birth year of Old C Squared followed by the last digit of the birth year of his wife, Margaret.

To calculate yyy, reverse the digit order of the two-digit death year of Old C Squared's wife and add the result to 301. To calculate xxx, add the two-digit birth year of Old C Squared's wife to 102.

STEP TWO: Use the co-ordinates calculated in the previous step to locate the memorial to a University of New Brunswick physics professor and World War Two veteran who was killed after the end of the war while trying to save a drowning boy from the Saint John River. An important Fredericton street was named after him.

To calculate B add 3 to the number of words in the inscription on his head stone that stands as a tribute to his sacrifice. To calculate C, add 4 to A.

To calculate yyy add 296 to the two-digit year of his birth. To calculate xxx add 140 to the two-digit year of his death.

This is an appropriate point at which to use the hint to check the results that you have obtained for the final step.

STEP THREE: Use the co-ordinates calculated in the second step to locate the final physical cache. In wet weather, the ground to the final cache can be soggy. Once there, turn right several turns to A, then back past A to B, and then forward to C. Credit for finding this cache requires a signature on the log sheet. Please leave the cache as you found it. Also, please do not post photographs showing the two headstones.
