Narrikup is a small town between Albany and Mt Barker in the Great Southern area of WA. The name Narrikup comes from the Aboriginal name of a nearby brook which is thought to mean "place of abundance".
The first recorded non-indigenous activity in the area occurred on 3 December 1829, when Surgeon Thomas Braidwood Wilson, RN camped for the night on the banks of a stream some miles westward of the present townsite. The doctor and his party had set out from the military encampment on King George Sound.
Three properties were established in the district during the 1860-70s, but the first real influx of population occurred when the Great Southern Railway opened in 1889. The railway siding was named Hay River, but a reserve for a townsite was set aside in 1891, and in 1905 the regional surveyor for the area reported that several settlers in the area were interested in acquiring land at the siding. 20 lots were surveyed, and when a townsite was gazetted two years later in 1907 it was named Narrikup, after the nearby brook.
The first business was established in 1919 when Mr Sam Jolly began operating in a galvanized iron shed near the siding. As the district grew so did the business and in 1922 he transferred to a larger and more pretentious building on the Hay River Road, which is still in operation today.
Today Narrikup has a population of approximately 500.
The site where the hall now stands was originally the local school site from 1915 to1944. The hall was officially opened on a Saturday evening, November 17.1934 followed by a social evening, the first of many over the ensuing years. The hall is used by the locals for dances (especially good back in the 60s!), dramatic productions, badminton, meetings, and many other social gatherings. It has a kids’ playground and barbecues in the grounds for public use.
You will need your own pen to log your find. There is no room for any little extras. Watch out for the locals across the road. Have fun!
