Geocache Description:

This English Oak grew from an acorn brought from the famous Major Oak of England's Sherwood Forest.

Enjoy this amazing tree before or after visiting the great caches in Oakwood Cemetery. This is a perfect spot for a snack or a daydream of times gone by.

Info about The Major Oak, the parent of this beautiful tree.

It’s hardly surprising that Sherwood Forest’s Major Oak shows its age – it is around 1000 years old now and has been at the center of history and legend for centuries. Folklore has it that the huge, spreading branches of the Major Oak and its hollowed-out bough sheltered Robin Hood and his Merry Men from both the weather and the attentions of the Sheriff of Nottingham and his soldiers.

The tree’s vital statistics are impressive – it weighs around 23 tons, has a girth of ten metres (33ft) and a spread of 28 metres (92ft).

The Major Oak needs a bit of support to hold its green head high these days, and scientists have cloned the famous old tree – multitudes of Minor Oaks are already growing up locally and beyond (hello, ESF). The famous old tree stands at the heart of 450-acre Sherwood Forest.

To verify your find e-mail me the name of the professor who planted the acorn. Don't post your answer here even if encrypted. Thanks!
