Dale Horvath Traditional Cache
DaveandTonya: Since this trail was first created alot has changed. A new mountain bike/hiking trail was made that comes very close to some of the caches. A nasty storm blew though and changed the terrain by knocking down alot of trees. In the past few years it seems the coords on some of these have strayed a little. With these things as well as others, we think it's time for this trail to go. Maybe someone else will place new caches here and we can find them later. Thanks to all that have visited the dead trail. Cache containers have been removed.

Dale Horvath, played by Jeffrey DeMunn in the television show, was an older man who owned the RV the survivors used as their primary mode of transportation. He was of Caucasian-American background. Before the series, he was traveling across the United States with his wife, Erma, enjoying their retirement before running into the zombie crisis at the end of their run in Georgia. Early on he revealed his wife Erma was not lucky enough to survive like he did, and was killed by zombies before he joined the survivor community in Atlanta's outskirts. He did a lot of traveling before everything changed, and his equipment and know-how have made life without modern conveniences much more bearable for the group.
Also Dale, Rick, Tyreese and Hershel were put on a committe for the survivors at the prison. During the prison assault, he led the part of the group who chose not to remain at the prison, being indirectly responsible for ensuring the lives of the majority of the current group of living survivors. Dale effectively became new leader following the prison assault, after Rick declared "I'm through" with making decisions. However, shortly after he and the remaining survivors escaped from the prison after the war, he had lost that role and had been drifting away from the group as he has sought to find a new home, secure it, and finally be off the road for good. He was bitten during an assault on their stationary camp, but hesitated to tell the group and instead wandered off to die on his own (accepting what was to happen to him soon and calmly getting ready for it). Before he could, however, he was captured by a group of cannibal hunters roaming the area, and had his remaining leg eaten by them. (They had no idea he was bitten before they proceeded to eat his leg, which he found great amusement in.) The hunters, in an attempt to scare the survivors, returned him with no legs to their current campsite, where he was taken care of and bedridden almost immediately. On his last day alive, Andrea tearfully expressed how much she loved him and how much he had meant to her ever since her sister Amy died a few months before. He shared a brief conversation with Rick thanking him for everything he's done and how he was lucky to have made it this far. During the middle of the night, he finally succumbed to his bite wound and was shot in the head by Andrea so as to not come back as one of the undead. The day afterward, instead of being buried, his body was burned in front of the church and cremated with everyone circled around and bowing their heads in respect.
