Situated near Lincoln Mountain (elevation 9,000 ft) in the Mammoth Mountain ski area.
Most people are unaware of this unobtrusive structure. It houses Mammoth Mountain's principal howitzer used for clearing avalanche dangers on the upper slopes. Last year, Chuck of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol graciously gave us a tour of his big gun.
Chuck mans the howitzer on early mornings after heavy winter storms. You can hear the loud artillery rounds when they are fired at precise locations along Dragon's Back, Dave's and Climax runs to dislodge hazardous snowfall accumulations.
Access is year-round. A trail map is useful (www.mammothmountain.com/ski_ride/trail_map). It is then most easily approached on skis or board from Chairs 22 or 25 and a short walk. No need to climb up or attempt to enter the locked building. Enjoy the view. In the summer and fall, hike or bike up.
The magnetic key holder cache holds a small log. Bring your own pen. No stickers please. The container is placed unobtrusively. Please securely rehide it the same way.
