At the entrance to Kawerau is a Rest Area on the banks of the Ruruanga Stream.
It contains a memorial to Keith McKenzie who was very involved in making this stream a dedicated junior anglers’ stream that is stocked regularly with trout.
It is also a popular swimming spot and it is being replanted with native trees to attract birds.
There is also a large information map of the township, showing all the places of interest including the Information Centre and the free heated swimming pool.
