Geocache Description:

To claim a "Find" for this Earthcache you must send the answers to the following questions to me and just log a find. I will check your answers and come back to you, if I do not see them to be sufficient. Please don't wait for permission to log.

The southernmost Earthcache
of the Australian mainland

Wilsons Promontory National Park, also known as Wilsons Prom or The Prom, is a national park in the Gippsland region of Victoria, ca. 160 km southeast of Melbourne. It is mainland Australia's southernmost national park, known for its beautiful rainforests, magical beaches, and abundant wildlife. It now also contains the southernmost Earthcache of the Australian mainland.

Wilsons Promontory is dominated by granitic mountains that rise from the Bass Strait waters and host a wide array of granitic weathering. Other dominant landscape features at Wilsons Promontory are the coastal lowlands with a rich diversity of marine, colluvial, aeolian, and alluvial deposits.

While the northwestern parts of the Prom are dominated by mostly colluvial and especially calcareous aeolian sands associated with parabolic dunes in the lowlands, the central and southern parts form the highest areas of the peninsula and are characterized by weathered bedrock associated with erosional mountains, hills, rises and plains.

In order to log this Earthcache, you are invited to hike to the summit of Mount Oberon. From the Telegraph Saddle Carpark to the summit, it is a fairly easy hike of approximately 3.5 Kilometers (1h one way). The views from up there are breathtaking.

Log Requirements:

To claim a "Find" for this Earthcache you must send the answers to the following questions to me and just log a find. I will check your answers and come back to you, if I do not see them to be sufficient. Please don't wait for permission to log. Please note: You won't find a sign telling you all these answers. With my EarthCaches I want people to make themselves aware of their surrounding and have some thoughts about our precious nature. So, I don't expect people to give me the perfect, geological answer, but I want to feel that they gave the questions some thoughts:

1. Name the major weathering processes and the unconsolidated covering material that is being formed through these processes.

2. Standing at the summit of Mount Oberon, try to explain in your own words, how weathering and erosion shaped the landscape of Wilsons Promontory.

3. Post a photo of yourself while standing on the summit of Mount Oberon.

(This is optional of course, but still highly appreciated)

Happy Caching!
