You seek a quart-sized water bottle, camo'd and stuffed with swag, in an empty lot next to the oldest of only four historically African-American boarding schools still remaining in the United States.
The Laurinburg Institute located next to this cache was established in the early 1900's in response to poor local funding of segregated 'negro schools' at that time. It was established with the assistance of famed educator and Tuskeegee Institute founder Booker T. Washington.
Started in 1904 by Emmanuel Monty and Tinny McDuffie, the leadership of the School has remained in the McDuffie family through three generations.
The Laurinburg Institute is perhaps best known as a basketball powerhouse, graduating many individuals who had gone on to play professionally. So much so, that when it lost it's NCAA accreditation in 2010, the story was carried by the sports units of most major networks.
Since 1904, the Laurinburg Institute has graduated more than 50,000 students. Distinguished alumni include Sir John Swann, the former Premiere of Bermuda and first person of color to be a head of state in the Western Hemisphere; Joy Johnson, one of the first African-American elected to the North Carolina General Assembly after the Reconstruction era; John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, an internationally renowned jazz trumpeter; and Charles “Charlie” Scott, the first African-American scholarship athlete at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Scott was an NBA All-Star and has been inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. He also won a gold medal as part of the USA basketball team at 1968 Summer Olympics.
So take note of the small brick buildings you will find next to the empty lot where the cache is.....there's a whole lot of history there!!
