let's have some fun with pi in honor of pi day.
we all know that pi is defined as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. that is pretty impressive, but what is really amazing is how many places in mathematics pi shows up without there being any (obvious) circle anywhere in sight. for example, the great swiss mathematician and physicist, leonhard euler, who was a rather "complex" fellow indeed, is credited with the euler identity, considered to be the most "beautiful" expression in all of mathematics:
e i pi + 1 = 0
the euler identity expresses a simple relationship between five fundamental mathematical constants:
0, the identity of addition
1, the identity of multiplication
pi, the heart of trigonometry, euclidean geometry and analytical mathematics
e, the base of natural logarithms, and the heart of calculus
i, the imaginary unit on the complex plane (= √ -1 )
furthermore, the expression on the left side of the equation requires exactly one of each of the three basic arithmetic operations: addition, multiplication and exponentiation.
it is a rather curious notion to realize that e i pi = -1, which also implies that pi = -i log (-1).
