Geocache Description:

The cache is located between the modern and not-so-modern buildings here. You may be observed by not-so-modern people in the modern building, but that's OK - they know what you're doing!

Room for very small SWAG. Geocaching magnet for FTF. BYOP.

UPDATE: The not-so-modern building has been moved to another location, but the cache is still in place - for now.

The first permanent schoolhouse in Dakota Territory was erected in Vermillion in 1864, finished virtually in a day with volunteer labor and a donation of $30. Vermillion had been selected by the First Territorial Legislature in 1862 as the location of the future territorial university; this may have influenced the establishment of the first permanent schoolhouse here. It was a log cabin, erected using timber from the nearby Missouri River floodplain, in the simple style that characterized early Plains structures. Prior to relocation of the townsite atop the Vermillion Bluffs following a major flood in 1881, the schoolhouse stood at their base. A concrete monument south of town on Dakota Street marks the site today, and a replica of the schoolhouse stands in your view.

It is possible to take a look at the inside if you are able to make contact with a docent at the Austin-Whittemore House, just two blocks to the east.
