Geocache Description:

Easy stroll, but beware of replicants and muggles!

Bladerunner (1984) was based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick (1968). The movie has much less of the backstory that the book provides, but is a lot more stylish than the thoughtprovoking original.

Set in a post-nuclear Earth (2021 in the movie), in which all the animals have died (starting with the owls for some reason), humans are assailed by radioactive dust that permeates everything and threatens to mutate them, preventing them from leaving for the "off-world" colonies. Owning a pet is therefore extremely prestigious, but most people only ever have robotic copies (hence the "electric sheep" of the title).

The prospect of moving "off-world" is aided by the existence of replicants, near-human robots that were employed for tedious or dangerous work. For some reason, replicants feel the need to go to Earth, but they are outlawed there, hence the need for Bladerunners, bounty-hunting police who track down and "retire" the replicants.

In order to determine whether a suspect is in fact a replicant, the Bladerunners use a device known as a Voight-Kampff machine. This measures physiological responses to psychological stimuli, as the replicants as close as they are physically to humans, cannot feel empathy.

Also not fully explained in the movie or the book is how the Bladerunners ever convince suspected replicants to submit to a test when the results are fairly dramatic if the test is failed. It is assumed stealth and subterfuge was required to administer the test without arousing suspicions.

The cache is an imagined copy of a prototype Voight-Kampff version and bears only a slight resemblance to the version used in the movie. There are some swaps and the log book in a plastic ziplock. Access requires a bit of a crawl, so it isn't totally wheelchair friendly. It might be muddy after rain too.

Watch out for replicants exercising and walking their electric dogs along the pathway leading to the cache. As with the application of the test, stealth is required. If you are approached by a replicant, you may have to make a rapid escape. If the VK machine is captured, they make be able to learn how to evade detection, and I'll have to make another one.
