Geocache Description:

Update 11/7/12: The cache kept going missing. Please solve as normal, then go 45 feet west to find the cache. Bumped difficulty up 1/2 point.

Welcome to my first hide. It's a puzzle hide. I remember promising a lot of you at the Great Leap Forward Event that I would start hiding some caches this spring. Well, here's the first one, and it's about time I get one out there.

So your first question may be, "what on earth is a 'King's Gambit'???" Well, the King's Gambit is a game opening that begins with the moves:

1. e4 e5
2. f4

Analysis: White offers a pawn to divert the Black pawn so as to build a strong center. Theory has shown that in order for Black to maintain the gambit pawn, he may well be forced to weaken his kingside. The King's Gambit is one of the oldest documented openings, as it was examined by the 17th century player Giulio Polerio. It is also in an older book by Luis Ramirez de Lucena. The King's Gambit is infrequently seen at master level today, as Black can obtain a reasonable position by returning an extra pawn to consolidate. There are two main branches, depending on whether or not Black accepts or declines the gambit.

Yes, it's two sides at war. Each side has a common goal: to kill the other side's king. Most of you are probably familiar with what game I'm talking about. So, in order to find this cache, you will need to know this game and solve this puzzle associated with it.

Solve for N44 AB.CDE W088 FG.HIJ

A = Pawn
B = Rook
C = 2 Knights
D = Queen - Pawn
E = Queen / (Rook + Bishop + Pawn)
F = Rook - Bishop
G = ([Queen * Knight] / Bishop) - Knight
H = Rook squared - 2 Queens
I = Bishop + Knight.
J = (3 Queens + 2 Pawns + Bishop + Knight) / Rook

This is a basic puzzle. It is not necessary for you to know how to play this game or know strategy, but for those that do know how to play, just wait, something more challenging is on the way soon enough. You will know you're in the right place when you get to GZ. Not winter friendly but is available in winter. Good luck and enjoy my first hide.
