Le origini di Arenzano (in genovese Rensen) sono legate a uno stanziamento romano di epoca tardo imperiale.

La storia di Arenzano è contrassegnata dalla dedizione ai valori del lavoro e della fede: popolo di contadini e uomini di mare si cimentarono prevalentemente, fino al XIX secolo, nell’agricoltura, nella marineria, nella cantieristica. In particolare nell’800, dopo l’occupazione piemontese, si verificò una certa ripresa legata allo sviluppo dell’attività cantieristica e di altre industrie quali le cartiere, le fornaci e le filande.

Dal ‘500 le incursioni dei pirati spinsero le autorità a dotare il borgo di fortificazioni (specie nel sito dell’attuale piazza Mazzini e sulla Punta del Pizzo) e di torri di avvistamento: di queste costruzioni resta oggi la cosiddetta Torre dei Saraceni, accanto al Santuario del Bambino Gesù di Praga.

Con l’epoca moderna Arenzano si sviluppa come località di villeggiatura e di vacanza che diventa Comune autonomo.

Ad aprire definitivamente la porta al turismo è la linea ferroviaria: nascono in seguito la passeggiata a mare, gli alberghi, gli stabilimenti balneari. Una vocazione che continua fino ai giorni nostri, epoca in cui Arenzano diventa al contempo area residenziale della vicina Genova.

Nasce come chiesa dedicata a Sant’Antonio e S. Bartolomeo; eretta nel 1749 per un voto fatto da un capitano portoghese, Bartolomeo Canthelo, che aveva sposato un’arenzanese. Nel 1800 la chiesa fu sconsacrata e impiegata come magazzino. In seguito venne costruita la terrazza e l’edificio divenne sede del Comune fino agli anni Ottanta, quando venne adibita a biblioteca comunale.

Il monumento davanti all’ingresso principale è dedicato a Simon Bolivar, eroe venezuelano, che conferì l’onorificenza del Libertador a un capitano di lungo corso arenzanese: Bartolomeo Calcagno fu il primo capitano italiano che risalì l’Orinoco per oltre 300 miglia.

The origins of Arenzano (Rensen in Genoese) are tied to a late Roman Empire settlement.

The railway line definitely opened the door to tourism: as a result were born the promenade, hotels, bathing establishments. A vocation that continues nowadays, the time when Arenzano becomes even the residential area of the near city of Genoa.

Born as a church dedicated to St. Anthony and St. Bartholomew, erected in 1749 to a vow made by a Portuguese captain, Bartholomew Canthelo, who had married a local girl. In 1800 the church was deconsecrated and used as a warehouse. It was later built the terrace and the building became the city hall site until the eighties when it was converted into a municipal library.

In the front of the main entrance to the building there is a monument dedicated to Simon Bolivar, the Venezuelan hero, who conferred the honor of the Liberator to an arenzanese sea captain: Bartholomew Calcagno was the first Italian captain who sailed up the Orinoco to more than 300 miles.
