Original cache muggled -- so moved (N 38° 32.114 W 106° 20.998) to the west side of the Upper Waterdog Lake (elev 11,475 feet), reached by hiking the Waterdog Lakes Trail. The hike to Waterdog Lakes is a short but steep one. Follow the trail around the lake to the west side. Look south for the incredible views of the Continental Divide and Banana Mountain! Happy caching!!
Congrats to JMKR for FTF on June 10, 2012!
Directions: From Poncha Springs, CO take US Highway 50 west, traveling towards Monarch Pass. Stay on Hwy 50 for approximately 13.5 miles. You will pass the Monarch Mountain Lodge located on the left side of the highway. From there, continue traveling for 2.75 miles. Watch for a dirt pullout on the left side of the highway at N38 31.886 W106 19.420. The trail is located across the highway at N38 31.897 W106 19.427 from the parking pullout. There is a nice Forest Service Trailhead sign and registration box. If you reach the turn-off to Monarch Park campground, you have gone too far.
The trail to Waterdog Lakes is steep but relatively easy to navigate in the deep winter snow. It is a favorite among local snowshoers! Note: Snowshoes required for winter access.
