Geocache Description:

Mostly uphill, a bit muddy under foot in places. Last 10 metres involve a rocky scramble, other-wise pretty easy
going, but not suitable for wheelchairs, prams, etc., and not recomended in the dark.

This cache has been re-opened aftr the first one was crushed under several tons of stone. the co-ordinates have changed a little.

Cache is in a white topped plastic food container wrapped in a black bin liner hidden beneath some stones at the foot of the remains of a small wall. There are several million tons of stone around here,it's up to you to find the few kilos hiding this cache, that's the challenge.
There are several goodies inside including a disposable camera, please take a photo and put it back in the container.
We suggest you use the car park at 54n37.158 002w28.917, please don't park on the villiage green. Walk out of the car park use the facilites on the right if needs be.Turn right out of the car park, follow the road round to the left
then straight on entering the bridleway between the houses. Make the most of the next 100 metres or so,this is the last downhill stretch until after you have found the cache, but don't panic, you won't be climbing the pike up in front of you this time, The first part of the track can be quite wet and muddy, further on it is quite stoney and rough, robust footware is the order of the day, as is bad weather clothing. These hills are not normaly considered dangerous but the weather can change very rapidly making life most uncomfortable, (I understand the bill for the mountain rescue helicopter is quite costly). Please close all gates behind you,(mind your toes when you go through the first one).Dogs are welcome but please keep them under control particularly if there are farm animals about. Please do not enter any enclosed farmland.
When you reach the vicinty of the cache you will see a stone built structure, this is not a mine entrance as some believe but a lime kiln used to produce burnt lime.
To do this, limestone rock was fed into the top of the kiln along with wood,or coal if available. This was burnt, producing 'burnt lime', burnt lime was used for a number of things including lime cement, whitewash, & mixed with animal hair it was used as plaster for walls.
If you have the time & energy you could carry on up the track and explore the old lead mining area, some of the mine entrances are still visible, they are small rectangular holes that go almost horizontaly into the side of the rock face. Most could just accomodate a man on his hands and knees, it must have been a hard life.
On the way back down at waypoint 54n38.041 002w27.537 to the right of the gate there is a stile in the wall, if you feel the inclination you could take the track on the other side of the wall, this will take you the other way around the pike, a good walk which will add quite a bit of time and distance to your trip. But you could see a variety of wildlife, including, buzzards, perigine falcons, ravens, badgers,
fox's & occasionaly golden eagles come over from the lake district and pay us a visit. Whichever route you take you will end up in the village and you may be lucky and find the tea shop open,(situated in the post office) (Please note 19/9/2008 the tea shop is still there but the Post office has been closed) or the Stag Inn for something a little stronger and a good nosh.
Have fun
