Every year the Boy Scout District runs a winter weekend campout called Polar Bear. This is a campout attended by most troops in the area. This outing requires the scouts to camp in the cold and in a good year snow.
Each troop will send its patrols (made up of 5 to 8 scouts) out to perform in a series of activity challenges that they will be scored on. There are normally 8 to 12 events, most with a scouting skill requirement (examples include fire building, orienteering, first aid, teamwork events etc) these events occur all day on Saturday.
Sunday features the great race using sheds build by the troops with wheels (no snow) or skis (snow). Each troop sends out 2 teams, one team for scouts 14 and under; the second team 15 and older. Each group goes one at a time on a timed course. One scout rides on the sled, while the other pull or push the sled.
The weekend concludes with the handing out of placement ribbons for each activity. One troop is also awarded the “Spirit Award” for having the best scout spirit for the weekend.
This is one of the most attended events of the year and definite highlight.
