During the 2nd World War, long stretches of our coastline were protected from possible invading forces by lines of concrete blocks and many of these are still in existence. They were intended to impede advancing armoured or other vehicles and are generally known as anti-tank blocks. There were local variations in shape and those shown to the right are close to Holy Island in Northumberland.
After the re-routing of the A73, the council, I presume, decided that we needed some here, although some of them are smaller than the WW2 variety.
Just what the blocks are protecting, or from what direction the invasion was expected, I don't know.
