Schaerbeek is one of Brussels’ least visited neighborhoods. Despite the fact that it was the home of Jacques Brel and René Magritte the quarter is fairly unknown with visitors, but worth a walk along the boulevards to discover its art deco and art nouveau heritage, a few historic monuments, squares and parks.
This lively place is named after Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (1790-1881), a Belgian painter born in Flanders. His paintings of sheep, of horses and of cattle in landscape brought him universal fame, and were eagerly sought for by collectors. Verbroeckhoven travelled to England in 1826, Germany in 1828, and France and Italy in 1841, and died in Schaerbeek in 1881.
