Geocache Description:

At the battle of Thermopylae, 300 Spartans defended Greece by fighting in the "Hot Gates," a geologic formation where mountain ranges on either side funnel into a small natural opening. Pocatello is called the "Gate City," for a similar geologic feature, the Portneuf Gap. Find the cache and get a unique view of the Portneuf Gap narrows, gateway to the rest of Idaho.

Coordinates will bring you to a group of three signs with interesting tidbits about the Portneuf Gap and surrounding area. The signs hold the numbers you'll need to find the cache so take some time to read them and ponder the notion that where you stand was once under 300 feet of rushing water.

The cache is located on the eastern flank of the gap less than a mile from the signs; you should be able to see it if you squint really hard. Expect a hike of about 1/3rd of a mile, up a dirt road and through some sagebrush on BLM land.
