Geocache Description:

You are looking for a medium sized cache, camoflaged with a red band on top. You don't need to enter the tunnel unless you want to. Be careful of mud and muggles.

For many years a mixed train leisurely plod the 33 miles of the Louisville and Nashville Railrodad's branch line between Richmond and Rowland. The engineer, a person familiar to everyone living within hearing distance of the locomotive's whistle, was one Henry Lammers. The sobriquet "Old Henry" came into use as the designation, first for the mixed train, and later for the entire Branch.
Construction of the Branch was started in July, 1867, and was completed November 8, 1868, the first run taking place on that date. Trains were scheduled to run through from Richmond to Louisville via the Branch.
When the Kentucky Central Railroad built south from Cincinnati and desired to extend it's track beyond Richmond to a junction with the L&N north of Livingston, it decided to lease the entire Richmond - Rowland Branch of the L&N, partly to get control of the two miles between Fort Estill and Richmond for a portion of it's main line. The lease was made effective June 1, 1882, and continued until the latter part of 1890. In December of that year the L&N gained control of the Kentucky Central, thus returning the Fort Estill - Rowland Branch to it's fold. For a number of years thereafter the Branch enjoyed two round trips daily of passenger trains running to and from Louisville and Cincinnati, respectively, as well as a local making a round trip between Richmond and Stanford. This tunnel was part of that route and was converted to an automobile route sometime in the 1940's.
