Das Gelände um den Poloplatz ist ein besonderes Bodendenkmal im nun etwas über hundertjährigen Frohnau, Berlins nördlichstem Winkel, und eine der ersten Immobilienentwicklungen überhaupt rund um eine Sportstätte. Gleichzeitig mit dem Restaurationsgebäude entstand der von Ludwig Lesser geplante Poloplatz mit der Polospielfläche, dem Sportplatz und den Tennisplätzen, umgeben von 1.100 aus den Niederlanden importierten Kastanienbäumen. Der Poloplatz Frohnau wurde am 11. Mai 1913 mit einem Turnier eingeweiht. Der Poloplatz Frohnau beheimatete viele Jahre den bereits 1906 gegründeten Berliner Polo-Club, den zweitältesten (nach Hamburg) in Deutschland und auf dem europäischen Festland. Nach Unterbrechung während des I. Weltkrieges begann der Polo-Club Berlin 1925 wieder mit dem Training. Die Turniere des Berliner Polo-Clubs in Karlshorst und später auf dem eigenen Platz in Frohnau waren gesellschaftlicher Höhepunkt der Berliner Sommer in den 20er Jahren und Anziehungspunkt für die Bohème, aber auch den Adel und Geldadel. Da für diese aus Persien stammende Sportart jeder Spieler zum schnellen Wechsel gleich drei Pferde benötigte, konnten sich nur reiche Berliner eine Mitgliedschaft leisten. Mit seinem weit verzweigtem internationalen Netzwerk und vielen jüdischen Mitgliedern – wie dem Verleger Ullstein – war der Polo-Club Berlin den Nationalsozialisten ein Dorn im Auge und so löste er sich aufgrund des politischen Drucks bereits 1933 auf, drei Jahre bevor auf dem Berliner Maifeld Polo zum letzten Mal olympische Disziplin war. 1945 beschlagnahmte die französische Militärregierung den Poloplatz Frohnau und veranstaltete Pferderennen. 1952 zogen die französischen Reiter in das Quartier Napoléon (die heutige Julius-Leber-Kaserne) um. Seitdem wird der Poloplatz Frohnau wieder von deutschen Vereinen genutzt. Die Reitanlage Am Poloplatz war 2009 Austragungsort der Deutschen Meisterschaft der Dressurreiter mit Handicap. Der Berliner Polo-Club von 1906 e.V. wurde in den 60er Jahren neugegründet und hat seit 2007 seine neue Heimstätte in Schönwalde gefunden, direkt hinter den Toren Berlins. The area of the polo field in now more than centennial Frohnau, the most Northern corner of Berlin, is a special historical ground monument and one of the first real estate developments around sports facilities. At the same time as the restaurants building the landscape architect Ludwig Lesser created the polo field, the sport grounds and the tennis courts, surrounded by 1,100 maple trees imported from the Netherlands. The polo field Frohnau was inaugurated on 11th May 1913 with a tournament. For many years the polo field Frohnau was home of the Berlin Polo-Club established in 1906, the second oldest (besides Hamburg) in Germany and on the European continent. After the disruption because of World War I the Polo-Club Berlin restarted training in 1925. The tournaments of the Berlin Polo-Club in Karlshorst and later on their own field in Frohnau were society highlights in the Berlin summers of the nineteen-twenties. They attracted Bohemians, as well as nobles and money nobility. With its widespread international network and many Jewish members – for instance the publisher Ullstein – the Polo-Club Berlin was a thorn in the flesh of the National Socialists. Therefore the Club disbanded already in 1933 due to the political pressure, three years before polo was an Olympic discipline on the Berlin Maifeld for the last time. In 1945 the French military government confiscated the polo field Frohnau and organized horse races there. In 1952 the French equestrians moved to Quartier Napoléon (nowadays the Julius-Leber-Barracks). Since then the polo field Frohnau is used by German clubs again. In 2009 the equestrian ground Am Poloplatz was place of the German Championship in Dressage for Disabled People. The Berlin Polo-Club established in 1906 was re-founded in the nineteen-sixties and found its new home in 2007 in Schönwalde, directly behind the gates of Berlin.
