Dieser Ort befindet sich am Rand eines Auslaugungstals. Dieses Tal lässt sich durch den gesamten Südharz verfolgen. Das Wasser aus dem nördlich gelegenen Harz laugte dieses Tal aus.
Die Beschreibungstafel selbst befindet sich auf noch verkarstungsfähigem Gips, der einen so genannten Karstwall bildet. Die Auflösung dieses Walls geht heute noch weiter. Dadurch entstehen an der Oberfläche Senkungs- und Lösungstrichter in verschiedenen Größen.

Großer Lösungstrichter
Durch die Bewaldung fallen die Lösungstrichter vor Ort kaum auf. Die einzelnen Trichter verknüpfen sich zu zusammenhängenden Tälern, den so genannten Uvalas. Insofern entstehen diese Täler nicht durch fließendes Wasser, sondern durch punktuelle Verkarstung.

Sie enthält u.a. eine gute Übersicht, welche Karstformen unterschieden werden sowie auch eine Panoramakarte vom Harz mit dem Verlauf des Karstwanderwegs.
Seinen Namen hat der Standort von dem ca. 300 Meter nördlich gelegenen ehemaligen Dorf Harzfeld, von dem noch die Ruine der Kirche übrig geblieben ist.

2. Von wo dringen Wässer in den Gips und setzen heute die Auflösung des noch stehenden Karstwalles fort?
3. Was ist der Fachbegriff für die Lösungstrichter, die sich im Lauf der Zeit zu Uvalas verknüpfen?

This location is near a lixiviation valley. This valley is ranged along the southern Harz. The water of the Harz in the north lixiviated this valley.
The information board is placed on karstifyable gypsum that forms a so called karst ridge. The dissolution of this ridge today still continues. This results in cones of depression if different dimensions on the surface.

Because of the forest vegetation these cones do not catch the visitor's eye. The cones tie together, thus, connected valleys appear. These valleys are called uvalas. Hence, those valleys are not formed by flowing water but by punctual karstification.
Additional Information
The "Station Harzfelder Holz" today is part of the Karstwanderweg (Karst Hiking Trail). A lot of information about this hiking trail can be found on its website. Among other things there is a good overview which karst formations exist. Furthermore you can find a panoramic map.
The name of this location is derived from the former village Harzfeld that is 300 meters in the north of this position. There you can still find the ruin of the church of this village.

1. Why cannot be found any gypsum in the lixiviation valley and on the opposite site of the valley?
2. Wherefrom do the waters infiltrate the gypsum and do still dissolve the still existing karst ridge?
3. What is the technical term of the cones of depression that tie together and form the uvalas?
