Kennewick

Kennewick is the Native American word for Grassy Place. Recently, the name was also bestowed on a ferry that runs in the Puget Sound. The largest of the Tri-Cities, Kennewick is located along the southwest bank of the Columbia River opposite of Pasco.

Columbia Center, southeastern Washington’s largest regional shopping mall, is among Kennewick’s many points of interest. It is also home to Toyota Center which hosts two professional sports teams: The Tri-City Americans hockey team and the Tri-Cities Fever, an indoor football team.

The newly built lighthouse sits on Clover Island. This small island has several restaurants, a hotel and a marina. Kennewick’s shoreline is also an ideal spot to watch the hydroplanes speed past at close to 200 MPH during the Water Follies that take place every year in the Tri-Cities on the last weekend of July.

Most notable to Kennewick, is the discovery of the skull and skeleton of a Native American man along the shores of the Columbia River. It has been determined that this skeleton could be as much as 9,200 years old. This prehistoric skeleton has since been named Kennewick Man. Currently, Kennewick Man is sequestered at the Burke Museum in Seattle.
