James Macandrew was the kind of person that made things happen.
He was born 1819 and arrived in Dunedin on 17 January 1851. James was the "Uncrowned King of Dunedin", a highly energetic man who was associated with the progress and prosperity of Otago in the early years.
In 1853 he was elected to Otago Provincial Government. Then in 1860 he was elected as 2nd Superintendent of Otago, before becoming the member of Parliament for Otago in 1863. James used his influence to help found Otago Boys High School in 1863, Otago Girls High School in 1871, Otago Museum in 1877, Teacher Training College in 1877, the Medical School and School of Art in 1870, but he was most proud of helping create the University of Otago in 1869. A bust of James sits proudly outside the Otago Settlers Museum, proclaiming "There was no other circumstance in his life of which he was more proud than that it was he, more than any other man who was the creator of the University of Otago."
James married Eliza and they had ten children, Colin, Marion, Thomas, Jane, James, Herbert, Hunter, Alice, Mabel and Arthur. Sadly James died in an accident in February 1887 aged 68. He did however leave his mark in Macandrew Bay, which is named after him and many of the streets in the bay bear the names of his children.
