Cache near the village Archaia Epidauros
Gialasi View
For this cache you can park your car in front of the small theater of Epidaurus. The coordinates of this parking place are: N 37° 38.009’ en E 023° 09.593’
You can also park your car at the parking place at the end of the peninsula when you are coming from the village. After parking your car you can follow the brown sign “Small Theater”. It is a nice walk.
The small theater (4th BC) is not as famous as the big theater, but in ancient times this place was the centre of the city of Epidaurus and the Acropolis was on the top of the hill. Next to the theater was the marketplace and last year they found a big statue of the god Hermes. There was also a harbor, but it is now under the sea since the volcano of Methana erupted in 230 BC. You can see the remains, when you are swimming or snorkeling, which are known as “The sunken City”.
Archaeologists are busy excavating the old city.
The theater is used at weekends during the month of July for music concerts.
When you walk up the hill you take the paved road. After a while the road is unpaved and further on, when you get to the small church, it’s only a small rocky, sandy path. The church is always open.
On the top of the hill are ruins from a byzantine church and a Frankish wall. From here you have a beautiful view across the bay of Gialasi, the valley and the village.
