Geocache Description:

- caches are not inside of the utility boxes so please DO NOT OPEN-

This series highlights the warning system for a nuclear power plant. Anyone living within 10 miles of the plant knows what the sirens look like, and more importantly, sound like. Permission to place these caches was provided by Chris McCoy of the H. B. Robinson Nuclear Plant.

The single-unit, 710-MW Plant is located in Pine Ridge, S.C between Hartsville and McBee. This site also includes a coal-fired unit that generates 174 MW and a combustion turbine unit that generates 15 MW.

In the unlikely event of an emergency at the plant, 61 pole-mounted Whelen omni-directional sirens located in the 10-mile emergency planning zone (EPZ) around the plant would be activated to alert the public. Hearing the sirens does not mean you should evacuate.

If you hear the sirens and are not sure if it is a test of the system or an emergency, tune to a local radio or television emergency alert system (EAS) station listed in the link below. If there is an emergency, these stations should stop regular programming to give information and instructions to the public. The sirens will sound several times for three-minute intervals if there is an emergency that could affect the public.

Keep the television or radio tuned for more information. You might be advised to shelter in place or to evacuate from the area.

The sirens are activated by state and county officials and are tested often to make sure they work properly. The sounding of the sirens is probably just a test, but there could be an emergency at the plant.
