Geocache Description:

"Growing Up In Saugus (GUIS)".

When I was a kid, Wellston Dr. ended at the last houses. There was no school or park here. It was just wide-open spaces that went on, it seemed forever, with no civilization, until San Francisquito Cyn Rd.. There was no Copperhill Dr. yet. It was only a short bike ride from my house, so we came here often. The flat area was covered with dirt "Doopsy-Doos" to ride on with your bikes. We didn't have fancy mountain bikes back then, just the standard one speeds. There were no fences or "No Trespassing" signs that I was aware of, so we would push our bikes to the top of the steep hill, off to the right ahead, and daringly ride down. The hill seems so much higher when I wasn't so grown-up! Straight ahead, and slightly to the left, down one of the ravines, there was a mystery for us kids. It was both fascinating and scary for me. It was an old rusty mine shaft. We would hike up to it and curiously peek down inside. I was always scared that I would accidently fall in and never be able to get out. I also was very scared of what may be inside, particularly a living thing, human or animal. My sister and I hiked back here a few months ago, after coming around the other side to find the cache on the ridge. We looked all around for signs of the shaft, but it must have been removed long ago and nature has taken over its scar on the landscape. My sister did some research on what the miners must have been searching for, and all historical evidence seems to point to the fact that it must have been a gold mine! If we had know that as kids, imagine how much more curious we would have been!

We were rich, growing up in Saugus, and it couldn't have been much better.

When seeking this cache, there are "No Tresspassing" signs all around, but don't worry, seeking this cache won't cause you to break the law. Please re-hide, tucked away, carefully.
