Geocache Description:

The cache is situated at one of the three forts used by British Army during the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) in Springbokfontein, today know as Springbok. From here you have a panoramic view of the town, including the positions of the other two forts (Springbok Fort is indicated as Fort No 3 on the map). You can still find the odd rifle shell or bullet point around the koppie. Just below the fort you'll find a rock crevice. It is believed that the British troops entered the fort through the rock crevice. The fort looked like a small reservoir, build by rocks and enforced with sand bags. The roof was just corrugate iron sheets on top of railway tracks. Holes were made in the wall for small rifle defence.

General Jan Smuts (together with Maritz, Van Deventer and Bouwer) attacked Springbokfontein the morning 04H00 on 1 April 1902, with 200 Boers. The British Army had only 120 defenders in and around the three forts and were easily defeated by 20H00 the evening with two casualties on their side and none on the Boer side. The graves of Ronald James Steward and Henri van Coevorden are found in the old grave yard just west of Springbok (100m north west from this cache - indicated on the map).

Directions to Cache: Travel on the Kleinsee road. Turn left at S29° 40.115' E017° 52.726 and travel in the drirection of the Weather Station. You can park next to the road at the Weather Station.
