Geocache Description:

A series of 10 caches which follow the farm trail around the beautiful South Penquite Farm. The caches are all child friendly with easy hides and plenty of room for swaps, travel bugs and coins.

There is a section of the walk which follows the banks of the river De Lank which is unfenced, so please keep a close eye on children. South Penquite is a working farm with free running chickens and Galloway cattle so unfortunately dogs can't walk the trail.

Parking can be found in the camping field and has been signposted by the landowner. Please do not park on the moorland farm lane as it is a SSSI area. From the farm yard walk down the leafy lane and out through the farm entrance gate onto an area of the moorland known as Pendrift Downs.

Once over the bridge take the farm track to the right which leads across the moor eventually crossing a ford and passing over a cattle grid.

Keep following the track. Turn left off the track when you see another cattle grid about 50 metres in front of you and head towards the footpath gate which leads to the Gallery.

You now find yourself walking along the head of ancient woodland called The Coomb. It has gained international importance as it has remained untouched for centuries and contains many rare lichens.

On through the next gate and the footpath leads you to a stile with excellent views over the historic De Lank granite quarry. The Eddystone, and several other lighthouses came from De Lank, and more recently the stone for the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain and the Eden Project’s giant Seed.

Keep an eye out for the rate and endangered Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterfly which can be found in the valley.

You can leave the trail and explore the settlement of bronze age hut circles and reeves if you wish before walking towards the disused Hantergantick Quarry. Drop down into the valley through the gate and follow the path alongside the De Lank River.

Pass the stony circle and climb back up and through the gate into the fields. Head through the large beech trees and to the standing stone which is prominent in the furthest field known as Ryedown. The stone is thought to be the remains of a prehistoric kerbed Cairn and from here you can also see popular beauty spot, Delphi Bridge.

Wander back through the fields and around the back of South Penquite Farm house before heading through the farm yard and down the leafy lane back to your starting point.
