You are standing on the site of Shearman Elementary School, built in 1917 and razed in the winter of 2011-2012. For 94 years, the school served as the public primary school for families on the west side of Marshall and as a pre-school/daycare called the Shamrock Center as well as a vocational education facility for young adults in its final years.

In July 1916, with a vote of 64-4, Marshall School District voters approved a $10,000 bond to build a two room school on the site of the old West Ward School dating back to the 19th Century. The new school opened its doors in September 1917. It was named in honor of Francis W. Shearman, who had been heavily involved in education efforts early in the history of Marshall and Calhoun County.

In the summer of 1951, the Marshall School Board decided to expand Shearman School as a result of the rapid growth of students in the district due to the post-WWII Baby Boom. Following a pro-millage campaign titled "You Can't Argue with the Stork", on November 6, 1951, voters approved a bond of $160,000. It funded the addition of five additional classrooms, an all-purpose room, an office, a teachers' rest room and a kitchen, considerably expanding the size of the building. The cornerstone of the addition was laid in September 1952 and the addition opened in September 1953.

The south half of this lot contained the actual school building. The north half of the lot was the school playground. I purchased the house at 626 W. Prospect just north of the playground in 2006. Previously, it was the home of a long-time teacher in the district, Mrs. Church. Over its final five years, I was awakened early many weekend mornings by kids playing on the playground equipment. The school and the playground were removed in January and February 2012 during an exceptionally mild winter.

In March 2012, local residents petitioned the school district to donate the property to the City of Marshall for the construction of a public park. To date, no determination has been made by the school district on the future use of the property.
