Geocache Description:

A quick cache in beside two geothermal bores.
Please use car park at given co-ordinates as this is a busy industrial road.

This will take you near two bores that supply the Kawerau Mighty River Geothermal Power Station with steam.
The Kawerau geothermal field is world-class and capable of sustaining further development.

Mighty River Power’s 100MW , $300 million geothermal power station at Kawerau was the largest single geothermal development in New Zealand in more than 20 years.
Construction began in January 2007 and at its peak 27 companies and 400 people were working on the site.
The power station was fully operational by the end of August 2008 – ahead of time, under budget and capable of generating 10 per cent more power than planned.

The only place to get much of a view of it is, as you approach Kawerau from the north (Whakatane way) near the Pulp and Paper Mills, to the right when on the overbridge.
Looking at the picture below, the power station is mainly the two large white structures in the foreground. The bores in the cache geozone are in the far right beside entrances to Tasman Pulp and Paper Mills (Carter Holt Harvey and Norske Skog).
This site shows good closeups of the power station structures: (visit link)

Key Points of interest:
8km of geothermal fluid injection pipeline
Single steam turbine and generator
Dual flash high and low pressure steam is used to drive the turbine
Forced air evaporative cooling tower
Injection 2km north of the power station
45,000 tonnes of geothermal fluid extraction per day
100MW net-plant electrical output
115-120 degrees Celsius injection fluid temperature
6 production wells – 1,900-2,100 metres depth
4 injection wells – 1,900-2,600 metres depth
