Geocache Description:

This small cache is located in AVIS's Purdon Reservation http://www.avisandover.org/purdon.html . This seemingly small, inconsequential AVIS reservation was the site of an historic event that occurred in 1843, before an audience of thousands. This cache will take you to the natural amphitheater where this event took place. On November 9, 1843, then Secretary of State of the United States Daniel Webster, came to Andover to address a crowd of delegates from Essex Country, as well as many other interested on-lookers. It was reported that every town in Essex County was represented at this event. The address came to be known at the Convention of the Whigs at Andover. Webster spoke eloquently in favor of reunifying of the Whig Party and offered his remarks about the upcoming presidential election. Just like many of our modern day politicians, the famously loquacious Webster was not brief; the speech he delivered was 36 pages long, and is available for your viewing pleasure courtesy of the National Archives: https://archive.org/details/mrwebstersaddres00lcwebs/page/n10 The meeting site was described as "a sequestered dell of a circular form, partly surrounded and sheltered by the native forest, about a quarter of a mile from the village, where a platform had been erected in front of the amphitheatrical slope, which furnished accommodation to a very large audience".
