Geocache Description:

Gorgeous island in the middle of Sydney Harbour - great for kids, swimming, picnics and of course caching!

Can access from 15 min kayak trip (either from Rose Bay's Tingira park or a little beach below Point Piper police station), water taxis, Captain cook Cruise boats, personal boat and a ferry service that runs four trips a day out of Circular Quay on Saturdays and Sundays.

Keep in mind, if arriving by kayak, it can be hard to pull up on the beach at very low tide due to rocks and oysters.

The local aboriginal peoples call the island Boambilly. The name Shark Island is from its shape, which is claimed to resemble a shark.
Parts were set aside as a recreation reserve as early as 1879 and it was also used as an animal quarantine station and naval depot up until 1975. At that time it became exclusively a recreation reserve and part of the Sydney Harbour National Park.

Just north of the northern tip of the island is Shark Island Light, an active pile lighthouse which was built in 1913.

Some of the paths on the island are in disrepair, stay away from the cliff edges. Please leave as found and remember to bring something to swap. Feel free to reward yourself with a sticker.
