This one will need supervision of children as it is near the main road and you will need a pen as it is a nano.
This is one in a series of caches, some are part of a multicache, some are traditional. They have been illustrated with the help of Thrapston and District Historical Society to take you round the varied history of Thrapston. It is designed to be an easy stroll of a couple of miles and is suitable for children. Take a pencil or pen as some are nanos. Some are on grass so you may get damp feet.
If you’re doing the series, park in the Bull Ring car park (see No.1). There are places you can have tea and cake or several family-friendly pubs in the High Street.
Thrapston has been in existence for 2000 years. An old Roman bridge has been found in the gravel pits and the name is thought to be pre Christian. It was originally called Draefstestun meaning the farm of Draefst; by 1086, it was Thrapestone and in 1130, it was recorded as Strapetona.
In 1205 Baldwin de Vere, Lord of the Manor, requested permission from King John to hold a market every Tuesday. King John awarded the market charter in return for two palfreys (small riding horses) which are represented on the Town’s Flag and civic badge.
The most interesting item near this cache is the old mile post with “Thrapston cattle Market 5 furlongs” on one of its sides. Just look over the road.
