An easy cache near footpath by the Senhouse Roman Museum.
Small clip and lock box. Beautiful elevated view of the Solway, and, on a clear day, Criffel in Scotland. Great view of Maryport Harbour.
In this centenary month and year of the sinking of the Titanic here's an opportunity to remember that this is the birthplace of Thomas Henry Ismay in 1837. Thomas was born in Maryport, Cumberland. He was the founder of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, taking over the struggling White Star Line. His son was Joseph Bruce Ismay who travelled on (and survived) the maiden voyage of his company's ocean liner, the RMS Titanic in 1912. As the Titanic sank, he helped passengers into lifeboats. As an half empty collapsible was being lowered he stepped in, this was seen as a cowardly act and his reputation was ruined.
For those of you who are visitors to this stunning town, Ismay lived on Ellenborough Place, there is a plaque on the front of it. He was born in Maryport but I don't know where, maybe one of you keen cachers know, if so, please tell. If you have time, have a drive round the old part of the town, Fleming Square is very impressive, as are many of the surrounding streets.
